Abstract

Quality seeds play an important role in the establishment and productivity of forest plantation. Among various factors which tells upon the quality of seeds, the tree age in also one. Studies on the effect of tree age on seed and seedling quality in A. nilotica revealed that seeds collected from trees more than eight year old gave better quality seed with high 100 seed weight, germination and germination values. These seed in turn gave healthy seedlings in the nursery with higher values of shoot/ischolar_main length, ischolar_main/shoot ratio and dry matter production. Hence, in collecting seeds for nursery raising in this species tree of more than eight years should be chosen.

Abstract

The best graded seeds (big and medium sized) were fortified with inorganic nutrients viz., Na₂HPO₄, K₂HPO₄, KCI, KNO₃, CuSo₄, K₂So₄, ZnSo₄ and with water soaking in two different concentration viz., one and two percent, respectively for 24 hours. Among the nutrients, seeds fortified with 1% KNO₃ recorded the maximum germination percentage (82%) and vigour index (1092) than control which recorded 53% germination and 345 vigour index respectively. Significantly the highest nursery establishment after 21 days enhanced the germination by 42%. Similarly the same seeds subjected to seed fortification with growth regulators like IBA, BA and GA₃ and kinetin with 100 and 200 ppm concentration for 24 hours enhanced the germination and seedling emergence. Seed fortified with 100 ppm GA₃ recorded 34 % increases in germination than the control at laboratory. Similarly the nursery establishment of seedlings after 21 days recorded maximum germination of 79% with the vigour index of 3771 than the control with 34 % germination and and vigour index, respectively.

Abstract

Studies conducted on the effect of seed source on the seed and seedling quality revealed that high seed quality and germination have resulted in higher shoot and ischolar_main length, ischolar_main/shoot ratio and dry matter of seedlings both during 21 and 90 DAS. This augments the opinion that clay and loamy soils are ideal environment for seed collection in Acacia nilotica. Always avoid areas having clacareous soil layer, red soils and from trees in tank beds which are under prolonged water logging.

Abstract

Creativity and innovation are important factors for sustainable agricultural growth. Intellectual property rights (IPR) is the key driver of innovation. However, many argue against this view, as it would benefit only a certain section in a country. The present study analyses the perception of stakeholders on Indian IPR system for plant varieties. A perception survey was conducted among various stakeholders of the seed industry across the country during 2011-12. Contrary to the view that IPR plays no role in innovation, this study finds a positive perception of majority of stakeholders on plant variety protection (PVP), while highlighting the hits and misses of Indian PVP.
